Rain in the valleys, snow on the peaks — and plenty to smile about

November has arrived in Bulgaria in true autumn style: heavy rain in the lowlands, the first real snow in the high mountains, and that unmistakable feeling that ski season is around the corner. Here is what is happening, the good news worth celebrating, and how to plan the perfect Bulgarian winter.

Bansko · Pirin Mountains

Projected opening: around 12 December · Best for: serious skiing and nightlife
Bulgaria’s most modern ski area, with slopes reaching about 2,600 metres and a long season thanks to its high altitude and snowmaking. Bansko has hosted FIS World Cup races.
  • Stroll the cobbled old town and warm up in a traditional mehana with live folk music.
  • Visit the Velyanova House, a beautifully painted Revival-era home.
  • Soak in the hot mineral pools of nearby Banya village after a day on the slopes.

Borovets · Rila Mountains

Projected opening: late December · Best for: a quick escape from Sofia
Bulgaria’s oldest mountain resort, about 70 km from Sofia, set in pine forest beneath Musala — at 2,925 metres the highest peak in the Balkans.
  • Try night skiing under the floodlights.
  • Take a scenic day trip to the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery.
  • Ride the gondola for winter views of the Rila range.

Pamporovo · Rhodope Mountains

Projected opening: late December · Best for: families and sunshine

  • Explore the folk architecture of Shiroka Laka village nearby.
  • Taste Rhodope classics like patatnik (potato pie) and creamy local yoghurt.
  • Visit the Smolyan Lakes and the town of Smolyan.

Vitosha & Sofia

Best for: a city break with snow on the side
Vitosha mountain rises right above the capital, so you can combine museums, cafés and Sofia’s nightlife with a day in the snow at Aleko.
  • See the medieval frescoes of the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church at the foot of Vitosha.
  • Walk the snowy trails above the city for panoramic views.
  • End the day with Bulgarian wine in central Sofia.
