Sofia Named Europe’s Best City Break for 2027
Bulgaria’s capital is stepping into the international spotlight, earning recognition as one of Europe’s most exciting destinations for a city break.
Sofia has been named Europe’s Best City Break for 2027, finishing ahead of popular European destinations Lisbon and Copenhagen in the European Best Destinations ranking.
According to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), more than 11,000 people participated in the vote, putting Bulgaria’s capital firmly on the international tourism map.
Why Sofia Deserves the Spotlight
Sofia offers a distinctive blend of ancient history, cultural heritage, vibrant city life and easy access to nature. Visitors can explore Roman ruins in the heart of the city, admire the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, discover lively cafés and restaurants, and enjoy the green spaces of the capital — all with the magnificent Vitosha Mountain as a backdrop.
The city’s appeal lies in its contrasts: centuries of history meet a modern European atmosphere, while Bulgarian traditions remain an essential part of everyday life.
International Recognition for Bulgaria
The title brings more than prestige. Over the coming year, Sofia is set to receive international promotion, including exposure through Forbes International, helping introduce the Bulgarian capital to a wider global audience.
For Bulgaria, this recognition represents an opportunity to attract more international visitors, support local businesses and showcase the country’s cultural richness beyond its famous Black Sea coastline and mountain resorts.
