Cybersecurity to Space – Bulgaria’s High-Tech Momentum

Headlines don’t always show it, but Bulgaria has quietly been building a modern, tech-forward economy. This month brought several signs that the effort is paying off.
Talking tech with Brussels
On 12 October, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister met a European Commission Executive Vice-President to discuss investment in technology. Earlier in the month, the PM said Bulgaria has a role to play in developing Europe’s space capabilities, and President Iliana Iotova said the country has confidently embarked on a high-tech journey.
A clean bill on cybersecurity
The European Commission has closed its infringement procedure against Bulgaria over the EU cybersecurity directive. In plain terms: Bulgaria has brought its rules in line with Europe’s standards for protecting networks and digital services.
Jobs and homes
- Unemployment: According to Eurostat, Bulgaria’s unemployment rate was just 3.5% in August 2026, one of the lower rates in the EU.
- Housing: Home lending continued to grow in the second quarter of 2026, a sign of confidence among families buying property.
The bigger picture
After years of political turbulence, one analyst noted this month that Bulgaria still looks exceptionally well placed compared with many of its peers. With the euro adopted, Schengen membership secured and technology high on the agenda, the foundations for growth are firmly in place.
